Why the Best Career Moves Are Made Towards Growth

BackBack to Resource Centre

One of the most important lessons we’ve learned through years of recruiting and advising professionals is this: the best career moves aren’t made to escape discomfort, they’re made to pursue growth.

It’s a subtle shift in mindset, but it fundamentally changes how career decisions are made.

Many job changes are driven by frustration: dissatisfaction with a manager, boredom with the work, or burnout in a role. When that happens, it’s easy to believe the grass will be greener elsewhere.

But decisions driven by discomfort often focus on what someone is running away from, rather than being clear about what they’re running towards.

The strongest career decisions are guided by an internal filter, not external optics. We encourage candidates to ask questions like:

  • What will I learn in this role?
  • Which skills will I build?
  • How will this stretch me in ways that matter five or ten years from now?

Early-career professionals, in particular, are often tempted by roles that pay slightly more or look better on paper. We’ve seen many of these moves feel like progress in the short term, but ultimately limit growth rather than accelerate it.

That said, we recognise there are situations where leaving is the right decision serious issues are always exceptions. Outside of those cases, the most impactful career moves are intentional ones: moving towards opportunities that build long-term capabilities, broaden perspective, and create compounding value over time.

From our vantage point, the candidates who thrive in the long term aren’t those who chase comfort, they’re the ones who pursue growth.
