The 4-day work week is gaining real traction – what does it mean for tech hiring?
The 4-day work week is gaining real traction – what does it mean for tech hiring?
Flexibility in the workplace isn’t a new conversation, but the 4-day work week is moving from experiment to mainstream faster than many expected. For businesses hiring in tech right now, it’s worth understanding what’s happening – not because you have to change everything overnight, but because your competitors might already be thinking about it.
What the data is showing
The early results from companies that have trialled it are largely positive. According to Indeed, a trial run by South Cambridgeshire District Council found that 21 out of 24 services improved or stayed consistent under a 4-day week. Absenteeism dropped, morale improved and staff were more focused. Many businesses use what’s known as the 100:80:100 rule – 100% of the pay, 80% of the time, 100% of the productivity. The idea isn’t to do less work, it’s to do the same work more efficiently.
That said, it won’t suit every business or every team. The key is understanding whether it could work for yours – and what the alternatives look like if it doesn’t.
What this means if you’re hiring
With only 11% of UK workers currently feeling engaged at work, candidates are thinking carefully about where they go next. Flexibility – whether that’s a 4-day week, hybrid working or flexible hours – is increasingly part of that decision, sitting right alongside salary and career growth.
You don’t necessarily need to offer a 4-day week to compete. But having a clear, honest position on flexibility will make a real difference to the quality and volume of candidates you attract. The businesses winning on hiring right now are the ones that have thought this through and can articulate it well during the recruitment process.
What this means if you’re job hunting
If flexibility matters to you, it’s worth raising it during the process – not as a demand, but as a genuine conversation. More employers are open to it than you might think. And the ones who aren’t will tell you early, which saves everyone time.
At ARC IT, we work with businesses and candidates every day and we see both sides of this conversation. If you’re a hiring manager trying to figure out what a competitive offer looks like right now, or a candidate weighing up your options, we’re happy to chat. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer – but we can help you find what works for you.
