Candidate Resources

How to spot a great tech employer before you accept the offer

BackBack to Resource Centre

Accepting a job offer is one of the most significant decisions you can make in your career. Yet most people spend more time researching a holiday destination than they do the company they are about to commit the next few years of their professional life to.

The good news is that the information is out there – and the hiring process itself tells you more than most candidates realise, if you know what to look for.

The hiring process reflects the culture

How a company treats you as a candidate is often a good reflection of how they operate day to day. Were they organised and respectful of your time? Did they communicate clearly at every stage? Did the people you met seem engaged and genuine?

A well run, thoughtful hiring process where you felt informed and valued throughout is usually a positive sign. Pay attention to how it felt, not just what was said.

Ask a few thoughtful questions

A good interview is a two-way conversation. Asking a couple of genuine, considered questions shows you are serious about the role and helps you get a clearer picture of the team and the business.

Things like what success looks like in the first few months, how the team works day to day, or what the biggest priorities are right now – these are all natural, reasonable things to want to understand before making a decision. The best employers will welcome them.

Look at the technology honestly

For tech professionals, what you will actually be working with matters. Before accepting, make sure you have a clear sense of the tech stack, the ways of working and whether there is genuine investment in the engineering culture. A business serious about technology will be happy to talk about it openly.

Do a little research

Beyond the interview, a quick look at review sites and LinkedIn can give you useful context. Patterns in how people talk about a business – rather than individual comments – can be informative. Look at how long people tend to stay and whether the business seems to be growing and investing.

Trust your instincts

Did the team seem happy? Did your potential manager seem like someone you would learn from? Did the business feel like somewhere with genuine momentum?

Your instincts are worth listening to. If something felt genuinely right during the process that is a good sign. If something felt slightly off it is worth reflecting on before you decide.

A great employer will give you reasonable time to consider an offer and be happy to answer any remaining questions. That in itself tells you something.

At ARC IT we spend time getting to know both our clients and our candidates – because the best placements happen when the fit is genuinely right on both sides. If you want a steer before making a decision, we are always happy to chat.
